Welcome to Athens, located in the center of Northern Alabama 15 miles from the Tennessee State line in historic Limestone County. The population of Athens is approximately 19,000 people. While Athens has an agricultural history, in recent years Athens has attracted major industry that has diversified the population. Education is a source of pride in the community, with its award-winning public school system and Athens State University which has been in operation since the 1800's. Notice of Road Closing

Forrest Street from the intersections of Marion Street to Beaty Street and Clinton Street from the intersections of Forrest Street and Lee Street will be closed for sanitary sewer construction on Tuesday, August 31, 2010. The affected area on Forrest Street will be closed at 8:15 a.m. and will remain closed on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. The block of Clinton Street between Forrest Street and Lee Street will remain closed to through traffic on a long term basis until all construction is completed.


Holiday Closing

The City of Athens Administrative Offices will be closed on Monday, September 6th for the Labor Day Holiday. Police and Fire protection will continue as usual.

Athens Historic Preservation Commission vacancy


The City of Athens announces a vacancy to be filled on the Historic Preservation Commission and is seeking qualified applicants.  Persons interested in serving on the Commission must be bona fide residents of the territorial jurisdiction of the City of Athens with training and experience in the fields of history, architecture, architectural history, urban planning, archaeology or law, or residents of or owners of property within a designated historic district.  Nominations for this position should be sent to the Mayor's office.
